Fertility-preserving options include:

• Egg freezing: Eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and frozen for future use. This is a good option for women who are undergoing cancer treatment, planning to delay having children until later in life, or have a genetic condition that affects their ovarian reserve. This is also a good option for transgender men to preserve their fertility prior to starting testosterone.
• Sperm banking: Sperm are collected and frozen for future use. This is a good option for men who are undergoing cancer treatment or have a genetic condition that affects their sperm, and for transgender women before starting estrogen.
• Embryo freezing: Eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and fertilized with sperm to make embryos. These embryos are frozen for future use. This is a good option for couples in which the female or male partner are undergoing cancer treatment that could lead to sterilization, for couples who are undergoing embryo banking for family planning or for specific genetic conditions, or for couples planning reciprocal IVF.

The success rates of fertility preservation depend on the reason for fertility preservation, the age of the person, and the quality of the eggs or sperm.
